With an NBA D-League team, a professional soccer team and a college football program in the works at UT-RGV, sports fan in McAllen-Reynosa are never far from the action … but that’s only the beginning. Two new world-class venues are on the horizon for the 2016-2017 season — a soccer stadium housing more than 9,500 seats, and an entertainment/events arena with 8,500 seats — all within a five-mile radius of McAllen-Reynosa.
The Rio Grande Valley Vipers
Since 2006, McAllen-Reynosa has been home to the most victorious team in the NBA Development League: the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The two-time title winners will begin playing home games at the brand new Bert Ogden Arena, a $68 million facility that will claim the title of the largest arena in South Texas when it opens in October 2016. The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros
The RGV FC TOROS is a member of the United Soccer League (USL). The team will serve as the development affiliate of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo. The USL is the strongest U.S. men’s professional soccer league below Major League Soccer (MLS), it features 24 teams in 2015 across the United States and Canada with multiple teams in all four time zones.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley recently announced it was embarking on a $100,000 study to assess the feasibility of football program at the university. The study is being spearheaded by legendary coach Mack Brown. While the first Vaqueros football game may still be a long way off, fans all throughout South Texas are ready for the kickoff of a new era of collegiate sports. For more information, click here.
