During the hurricane season of 2010, McAllen MSA's U.S. / Mexico border ports of entry were among
the few that remained open for commercial traffic and suffered no damage. Thanks to a strong levy
system in our region, we are able to channel water excess away from the city and maintain operations.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration the official hurricane season in the
Atlantic runs from 1 June to 30 November, however hurricanes can and do occasionally form outside
this season as well. The most active month, statistically, is September.
McAllen-area historical hurricane activity is significantly low compared to the rest of the other disaster
